Adelbert L. Button, of Norwich, died on August 29, 2004 at Chenango Memorial Hospital at the age of 92. Del was born on the family farm in Button Hollow on September 6, 1911, the son of Leon A. Button and Leeta Simmons Button.

He graduated from New Berlin High School in 1931 and began working for the I.L. Richer Company at New Berlin in 1932.

Virginia Launt Fleming of Sidney, N.Y., became his bride on July 18, 1935.

In 1934, Del was made manager of the Richer Mill and Store in Richfield Springs, N.Y. In 1945, after 3 years in the U.S. Coast Guard, he came to manage the Richer Feed Mill in Norwich. He subsequently was named the General Manager of all the Richer Mills and Stores and became Vice President in 1951 and President in 1975. Following his retirement in 1977, Mr. Button continued to remain active in the business offering counsel to the management and serving as Chairman of the Board until 2002.

Del had many interests of which railroading was one of his most loved ventures. He was actively involved with the growth of the Delaware Otsego Corporation which serves the region with the NYS&W Chenango Valley branch. He became associated with the railroad in 1973 and served on its Board of Directors and as its Chairman for many years.

Del was active in the local government as both an Alderman and the Mayor of the City of Norwich from 1954-1959. He was a member of the Norwich Historical Society and the Civil War Roundtable making several trips to the battlefields of Gettysburg and others.

Virginia, his wife of 56 years, predeceased Del in 1991. He was also predeceased by two brothers, A. Fenimore, Waverly, N.Y., and Mernice H., Guilderland, N.Y. A sister, Irene and her husband, Dr. Lynne T. Greene survive; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Mr. Button will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Norwich on September 18th at 11 a.m. Those wishing to remember him may do so by contributing to the Chenango Memorial Hospital Foundation, 179 North Broad St., Norwich, N.Y. 13815. Arrangements are with the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home.
