GALENA, Kan. — James I. Porter, 74, Galena route 1, died at 10:36 a.m. Thursday at St. John’s Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo., after an illness.

Mr. Porter was born Dec. 13, 1919, in Galena.

He was a lifelong resident of the Galena area.

He worked 35 years at The Empire District Electric Co. plant at Asbury, Mo., and retired as a foreman.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, Riverton, and the Galena Masonic Lodge.

He whittled the “world’s longest wooden chain" and made a guest appearance on "The Tonight Show " with Johnny Carson to show his work.

He married Georgia M. Beets on March 23, 1940. at Pineville, Mo. She survives.

Additional survivors include a daughter, Martha Buckner, Miami, Okla.; a sister, Anetta Porter, Galena; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena. The Rev. John Wilkins and the Rev. Brad Rogge will officiate.

Burial will be in Quaker Valley Cemetery, Riverton.

Pallbearers will be Richard Swaim, Red Carver, Gary McCorkle, Carson Bates, Bill Forbes and Ronald Evans.

Masonic services will be at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Visitation is scheduled afterward.
