Henry A. Mays likely was born near Hodges, [then Cokesbury] South Carolina at the old Mays home place. His grandparents are still buried near that town. He was the son of Abner Mays born in Edgefield County, South Carolina and Nancy Anna Morris born near Augusta, Georgia. It is possible that he was born in Georgia where he, his mother and sisters stayed with her relatives during the civil war while Abner was away serving in the Confederate Army. The family was in Atlanta during the siege of the city and left the city after it fell and was declared an open city. According to Henry, they procured a wagon and traveled to Augusta GA with his mother's relatives after Gen Sherman ordered the city evacuated and burned. Abner fought in the battle of Atlanta, and went with the Confederate Army [Army of Tennessean] under Gen John B Hood on its last ditch invasion of Tennessee where he fought in the battle of Franklin, Tennessee on November 30 1864 which is considered one of the bloodiest battles of the war. He was WIA on December 15, 1864 in the battle of Nashville a couple of weeks later. Abner served for four years in the Army of Tennessee with the 19th South Carolina Infantry Regiment, Company C. He participated in all the major battles in the Georgia/Tennessee/Kentucky area including Missionary Ridge, Chattanooga, Stone River, and Chickamauga. The Mays family came to Texas in ca 1865 after the war ended and settled first in Harrison County, Texas with relatives and later moved to Wood County and Hopkins County near the Harmony community. He was a farmer mostly.
