Baptized as Augustin Fuchs on the day of his birth at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Schirrhein, Alsace; his sponsors were Jean Halter and Antoine Schott. While located in France, Schirrhein was populated by a German speaking population of Swiss Catholic heritage, and August primarily spoke German both growing up in France and living in America. Despite his name being the French form of Augustine, August was primarily known by the German variant, Augustus.

August immigrated to America with his parents and siblings sometime between the death of his brother Christian in 1830 and the birth of his sister Frances in 1831. The family settled on a farm in an Alsatian community near the village of Osnaburg (now known as East Canton) in Stark County, Ohio. After coming of age, August moved to nearby Massillon to apprentice as a carpenter.

Married to Mary Ann Meyer by Fr. Peter Weber on July 27, 1853 in Massillon, Ohio. Mary Ann was also from the village of Schirrhein, although she was born after August's family had left the village and then resided with another Alsatian community in Senecca County with her family. However, August's older brother Nicholas and Mary Ann's older sister Julia Ann had gotten married in 1847 after Nicholas had moved to Senecca County. Together they would have ten children:
1. Mary Magdalena (b. February 8, 1857, in Avilla, IN)
2. Anna Catherine (b. July 4, 1858, in Avilla, IN)
3. Frances (b. October 27, 1860, in Avilla, IN)
4. John Henry (b. May 10, 1863, in Avilla, IN)
5. Emma (b. February 7, 1864, in Avilla, IN)
6. Clara Miriam (b. December 27, 1864, in Avilla, IN)
7. Charles Ignatius (b. October 6, 1866, in Avilla, IN)
8. Rosa Frances (b. February 22, 1870, in Avilla, IN)
9. Agnes Mathilda (b. November 11, 1874, in Leo, IN)
10. Martha Cecelia (b. November 20, 1877, in Leo, IN)

Shortly after their marriage, August and Mary Ann moved to a burgeoning Catholic community near Avilla, Indiana, along with August's brother, Nicholas, and Mary Ann's brothers, Albin and Ignatius. They would later be joined by August's parents, Anthony and Catherine. August and Mary Ann lived on a farm, but August would continue to work as a carpenter and builder and would become quite prosperous. After the birth of their daughter, Rosa, the family would again relocate to the Leo community in Allen County, where August would continue in the farming and building trade, becoming a prominent member of the German speaking Catholic community of Fort Wayne. Anna, Frances, Emma, Clara, and Charles would get married and live the rest of their lives in the vicinity of Fort Wayne, where other relatives of August and Mary Ann also lived.

Around 1890, August and Mary Ann would make their final move to Monterey, IN, along with the family of their son, Henry, and their four unmarried daughters, Magdalena, Rosa, Agnes, and Martha. August would own a large farm as well as a brick factory just west of the village. Throughout his life, August had been very active and highly supportive of his local Catholic parishes: St. Mary in Avilla, St. Leo in Leo, and finally at St. Anne in Monterey. In Monterey, particularly, August helped finance and construct the current St. Anne church building using bricks he produced at his factory. He would also donate land from his farm for the purpose of being a new Catholic burial ground, the current St. Anne Cemetery.

Died at Monterey on April 28, 1899. Buried in St. Anne Cemetery on May 1. His burial near the center of the cemetery was the first on the land he donated to be the new burial ground, although some earlier burials were later transferred from the Old St. Anne Cemetery.

"August Fox died at Monterey last Friday and was buried on Monday. His age was about 72 years. The deceased was the first to occupy the new cemetery, and had sold the ground for that purpose himself."
