Gary was born in Wolfe City, Texas, in the China Grove Community, to the late Glen Boyd and Ora Gertrude Greenway Carpenter. Gary married Barbara Jean Dry on Sept. 2, 1955, in Wolfe City. He was employed as an area sales manager for Firestone Tire & Rubber Company. Gary was also a member of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church in Waco.
He was preceded in death by three brothers; and a sister.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara, of Waco; sons, John Bradley "Brad" Carpenter, of Tyler, and Brent Carpenter, of Rhode Island; daughters, Angie Steinbach, of Tyler, and Tari Jurek and husband, John, of Hewitt; granddaughters: Courney Watson, Kristi Meyer, Ashley Carpenter, Charlotte Carpenter and Shelby Jurek; grandson, Justin Jurek; a great-granddaughter; and three great-grandsons.
