Helen Beatrice Daines Berg, 99 years, 29 days, of Ontario, WI, died Monday, May 19, 2008 at the Norseland Nursing Home in Westby, WI.

Helen was born on April 20, 1909 to Lewis and Birdie (Wallace) Daines in Ontario, WI. On November 19, 1929 she was united in marriage to Edwin Berg in Winona, MN. They farmed for a number of years in the Ontario area before moving to Ontario after health reasons forced Ed to quit farming.

Helen was employed as a cook in the Ontario schools for 10 years and later both were employed as janitors at Brookwood High School. Ed and Helen celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1989 and were married 66 years before his death in 1996.

Helen was a faithful member of Brush Creek Lutheran Church for many years. She enjoyed working in the garden and froze and canned many fruits and vegetables. She loved growing and taking care of her many flowers and doing craft work including crocheting afghans, reading, playing cards, and keeping a daily diary. Helen was a kind and gentle soul who was sensitive to others feelings and never had a bad word to say about anyone.

She is survived by a son, Gary of Wilton, WI; a sister-in-law, Mae Malphy of Black River Falls, WI; and a very dear friend and special lady, Myrna Ottum who's children were considered to be grandchildren and great-grandchildren by Helen; along with nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis and Birdie Wallace; her husband, Edwin; two brothers in infancy, Lawrence and Merwyn; three sisters, Ellen (Ellsworth) Thurow, Violet (Richard) Downing, Bonnie (Joe) Barat; along with six nephews and two nieces.

Funeral services will be Thursday, May 22, 2008, 11:00 a.m. at the Brush Creek Lutheran Church outside of Ontario, WI. Pastor Gary Daines will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
