My Grandpa (Frank Shumbris) once told my cousin, who was studying ancestry in 7th grade the following…"My parents' names were George Shumbriutu and Martha Borsch. They left me behind with my aunt when they came to America. I came through Ellis Island when I was 6 years old. I was born 4-6-00. I arrived with my aunt and neither of us spoke English. My only identification was a tag attached to my coat button bearing my name. I was reunited with my mother and father and we lived in Pringle. We were together for only a short time when my father died suddenly of an unknown cause. I had to pick up the slack to support my mother. I went to work in the mines at 8 years old as a breaker boy. My mother decided to remarry and started another family (Aurilla). When I was a teenager, I decided to become a merchant marine. I didn't have money to travel so I hopped freight trains and lived with hobos until I reached San Francisco. I stayed working as a merchant marine then returned to Wyoming Valley where I met Mary. Since there was little work in the Valley, I returned to the mines. I retired in 1958."
I have found no records that verify Grandpa's father's name. Grandpa's mother, is found in census records as Martha Shumbriz and later as Martha Aurilla/Orilla.
