Viola was born to Joseph Howe Smith and Sarah Cassady Smith. Joseph left Sarah either before Viola was born or shortly after. Viola said she never saw her father. Her Mother, Sarah, died with TB when Viola was 8 years old. Mrs. White, widow of Captain White, took Viola to raise. Mrs. White was a very well-to-do woman living on a farm with a fine home. She had a daughter and a son, Ed White. It was Mrs. White's plan to send Viola to college, but she died and her children never carried out her plan. Viola worked as a hired girl beginning at an early age. She hired out to Nicholas Schultz and his wife, German emigrants, for a long time. When Mrs. Shultz (or Schultz) died, he hired another woman to live with them and Viola lived with them until she was married. She was like one of the family. When he died, he willed her a 40-acre farm.

Viola married Alva James Cox on Feb 13, 1896. He was 17 years old and she was about 3 years older than he. They moved to a home of their own near Bell Union

The children born to them were as follows:

Raymond Nicholas, Dec 13 1897

Harriet Garnet Oct 1, 1899

Edgar Kermit, Sept 15, 1905

Kenneth Smith, Dec 20, 1907

Christine Gayle, Oct 11, 1912

Alva James Jr., Mar 3, 1914

Lola and Alva separated in July of 1925

Alva died April 5, 1952 and is buried in Providence Cemetery in Jefferson Township, Putnum County, Indiana.
