Retired Kardex executive dies at 68

Services will be Friday for John H. Smith, 68, of 142 Seneca Drive, former executive with Remington Rand and Kardex in Marietta.

He died at 5:50 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 1, 1991) in Marietta Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Smith started work with the Remington Rand Safe-Cabinet Division on Greene Street in 1950 and remained with the company and its successors for 37 years, retiring from Kardex in 1987. He served in various capacities, including manager of material planning and control, manager of production control and procurement, plant manager, division manager and national distribution manager. He retired from Kardex as director of distribution.

During his career, Mr. Smith was a member of American Production and Inventory Control Society, National Association of Purchasing Agents, American Philatelic Society, American Legion, the Elks Lodge and Park Congregational Church at Elmira, N.Y. He served as a member of the board of directors of Kardex Systems, Marietta Area Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Marietta United Way.

He was born May 28, 1922, at Lowell to John and Leah McFarland Smith. Mr. Smith moved with his family to Marietta in 1924 and attended Marietta public schools, where he was active in athletics. He was the youngest person in the area to achieve Eagle Scout ranking.

During World War II, Mr. Smith served with Merrill's Marauders in China, the Philippines, Burma and India and later was assigned to the Chinese 49th Division as the American Liaison Officer. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Chinese Commendation medals.

Mr. Smith attended Kent State University and received a bachelor of arts degree in economics in 1950.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 45 years, Ann Meister Smith; one daughter, Mrs. Jack (Jill) MacRae of Marietta; three grandchildren; one sister, Pauline Hightower of Columbus; and one brother, Howard Smith of Palm Beach, Fla.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in McClure-Schafer Funeral Home with the Rev. Donald Schuler officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery with military rites. Friends may call at the funeral home where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.
