Charles Edwin Gilb, beloved husband, father, grand-father, great grand-father, brother and uncle passed away on Sunday, May 18th, 2008, at his home in Arcadia from malignant melanoma cancer. Charles was born on November 13, 1924 on Mount Adams in Cincinnati, Ohio, and moved with his parents, Carl and Margaret Gilb and sister, Mary Lou to Twin Falls, Idaho where he spent most of his childhood. He began college at the University of Idaho at Moscow, but his education was interrupted by World War II, when he joined the US Marine Corps. He was stationed in the South Pacific and reached the rank of Staff Sergeant. After returning from his tour of duty, Charles resumed his schooling at Idaho, once again, and graduated with a degree in Business. While at UI, he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, an organization that he kept involved with throughout his life. He met his future wife, Ruth Valadon, at a zoology lab, and had been married over 60 years. They moved to Southern California in 1949. Charles' business career started as a salesman with the Friedman Bag Company. A few years later he joined the sales staff of the George R. Craig Company located at the 7th Street Produce Market. In 1959, he became head of the firm and its name was changed to the Charles E. Gilb Company in 1964. The CEG Company is a nationwide distributor of fresh fruits and vegetables, specializing in potatoes and onion. Branch operations are located in Bakersfield in addition to the head quarters just off the new Los Angeles Produce Market. Known as the "Potato King", Charles took an active role in the Produce Industry associations, having served as Chairman and/or on the Board of Directors of the United Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association, the Potato Growers of America, the Associated Produce Dealers & Brokers of Los Angeles, the Fresh Produce Council of Los Angeles and the Canadian Produce Marketing Association. He was also Chairman of the General Dillingham Produce Industry Scholarship Fund. Charles continued to go down to the produce market every day and sell his potatoes until just recently. As busy as he was in his chosen industry, Charles led an active role in the City of Los Angeles serving on the Los Angeles Alcoholic Commission and as Chairman of the Los Angeles County Fire Commission. Charles' civic pride is apparent. He served on the Arcadia City Council for sixteen years, beginning in 1974 through 1992. He held the office of Mayor four times during his tenure. He served as Chairman of the League of California Cities, Council of Mayors for 8 years, as well as being a board member and President of the L.A. County division of the League. Charles also sat on the boards of the Arcadia Educational Foundation, the Arcadia Historical Commission and served Past President of the Arcadia Tournament of Roses Association. Charles and his wife Ruth were instrumental in providing inspiration and funding for the Ruth and Charles Gilb Historical Museum of Arcadia. Charles' hard work and commitment to his industry and city has not gone unnoticed. In 1969, Charles was honored by the City of Hope as their "Man of the Year". He has received the Silver Beaver Award from the San Gabriel Valley Boy Scout Council. He made the University of Idaho Hall of Fame in 1990. Twice he has been honored by the city of Arcadia as "Citizen of the Year", once individually and once jointly with his wife. It might seem that Charles had no time for anything else, but he did. His love and devotion to his wife and children was never-ending. Charles was the biggest supporter of anything and everything his family did. Through the years, it wasn't unusual to find Charles coaching a little league team, attending father-daughter nights, rooting for the Arcadia High School Band or just spending time with his family and friends in Newport Beach. And Charles loved to travel. Every year he and Ruth were out globetrotting. Charles' legacy is worldwide. He has made an impact on everyone he has ever encountered and will be missed by all. He is survived by his wife Ruth, children, Denice, Michael and Valerie, daughter-in-law, Gayle, two granddaughters, Heather and Amy, their spouses Dan and Brian, and three great-grandchildren, Michael, Rulon and Miranda. He is also survived by his sister Mary Lou Novak and many nieces and nephews. He will always be remembered for that special twinkle in his eye. The memorial service is scheduled for 2:00 pm on Friday, May 23, 2008 at St. Rita's Church, 318 N. Baldwin Avenue, Sierra Madre, CA 91024. Burial will be on Saturday, May 24, 2008 at Rose Hills Cemetery and Mortuary at 10:00 A.M. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ruth and Charles Gilb Historical Museum, 380 W.
