Son of Honorable George S. and Rebecca L. Bryan. Born September 26, 1845, at Charleston, South Carolina. Was prepared to enter the sophomore class in the Charleston College, in 1860, but entered the United States Naval Academy. Resigned in March, 1861, and returned home. Was appointed midshipman in the South Carolina navy; and was present at the bombardment of Fort Sumter, in April, 1861. Upon the formation of the Confederate States navy he was appointed midshipman. Captured in Brazil while aboard the Florida in 1864, and confined in Fort Mann, Boston, until February, 1865. After the war he studied law; and was admitted to the bar in 1867. Has continued the practice of law since, at Charleston, South Carolina, as member of the firm of Bryan & Bryan. Elected city attorney, in 1878, which office he held until 1887, when he was elected mayor of said city. He was appointed by President Cleveland, collector of customs, for the port of Charleston, on February 13, 1894; and served as such until 1898, when his successor was appointed by President McKinley. Married Miss May Middleton King, August 3, 1869.
