Judge Smith was the son of Hiram Spencer & Cornelia Samantha Norris Smith. He married Maude White, daughter of S Lumpkin and Mary Virginia Jones White. They had one son; John Alexander Smith, Jr who married Evelyn Dodd, daughter of Leon and Terissa Randolph Dodd.
Judge Smith served two different terms as Judge of Probate. He served as Superintendent of Education from 1908 to 1916. He was a school teacher and a member of the Methodist Church. He served as a United States Marshall and later as Chairman of the First State Pardon and Parole Board.
