He entered the United States Army on 22 June 1961. His overseas assignments include one each in the Republics of Vietnam and Thailand.He also served overseas with the 501st Military Police company, 1st Armored Division in Germany.
SSGT Kohlmetz had served in Company E, 2nd Battalion, 3rd BCT Brigade since 2 April 1975. His awards and decorations include the Good Conduct Medal(4th award), Vietnam Campaign medal,Vietnam Service Medal,and the National Defense Service Medal. He had served a total of 15 years of honorable service to his country.
