STANLEY B. KAPLAN, M.D., died May 27, 2008 surrounded by his family at Baptist Memorial Hospital - Memphis, after a long illness. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, deeply devoted to and loved by his colleagues, patients and family. Born in Memphis on January 6, 1931, he attended high school at Central High School in Memphis, was an undergraduate at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, and completed medical school at the University of Tennessee, Memphis, College of Medicine, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society in 1954. He received postgraduate training at the Jefferson Medical College Hospital of Philadelphia and at the University of Tennessee, Memphis. He was a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine, and was appointed to the faculty at the University of Tennessee in July 1961, where he attained the rank of Professor of Medicine. He continued teaching, research and patient care activities until 3 weeks before his death. He was a member of the Memphis and Shelby County Medical Society, the Tennessee Medical Association, the Academy of Internal Medicine, and the American College of Rheumatology. He served on the Board of Directors for: Les Passees Rehabilitation Center, the Leo N. Levi Arthritis Hospital (Trustee), and of the West Tennessee Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation. He was a member of the congregation of Temple Israel. During his long career he received many honors and awards, including the Myron Halle Distinguished Service Award of the Arthritis Foundation, the Bernard J. Alper, M.D., Lifetime Achievement Award of the Arthritis Foundation, the President's Award of the Tennessee Rheumatology Society, and was named as the Memphis Business Journal's Health Care Hero Physician Provider in 2006. He was consistently named as one of the Top Docs in Memphis Magazine. He is survived by his loving wife, Sue; son, Brad Cope (Cindy); brother, Sidney Kaplan (Rosalee); sister, Joan; grandchildren, Krissy and Hannah Cope; five nieces and nephews; and ten great-nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 28 at The Levy-Cooper Chapel in Temple Israel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the University of Tennessee, Stanley B. Kaplan Memorial Fund, Rheumatology, 956 Court Avenue, Memphis, TN 38163, The West Tennessee Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation, or a charity of the donor's choice.
