As a youth, Marie Lightfoot Copeland moved to Chicago and then, in 1928, moved to Detroit. She completed high school at Miller High, graduating in 1935. Employed by the federal government for 15 years, she worked at Fort Wayne during World War II and later at the Ordinance Tank Automotive Command. Mrs. Copeland later was employed for 23 years by the Detroit Board of Education, working as a secretary in various locations. A member of New Calvary Baptist Church, Mrs. Copeland was active in the church school program where she taught Sunday School for many years and was a member of the Young Matrons, the Dorcas Circle and the Mission Department. She was also active in the American Business Womens Association.

Mrs. Copeland was survived by her husband, J.C. Copeland; son, Ronald Copeland; daughters, Atty. Linda Copeland-Drake and Gail Copeland; five grandchildren; sisters, Alberta Shelton, Zelma Lightfoot and Alice Johnson; and brothers, Jesse and James Lightfoot. Final arrangements were handled by McFall Brothers Funeral Home.
