Violet G. Akin, 83, died Friday evening in Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility, where she had resided since June 1998. She was a homemaker.
Born Aug. 30, 1917, in Degrasse, daughter of Earl and Hazel Town Curtis, she attended rural schools. When she was 7 years old, her mother died, and her father married Rosella V. Curtis.
She married James Bert Akin on Nov. 7, 1935. The couple lived in the Gouverneur area and then moved to Fort Drum, where they were caretakers of LeRay Mansion and Mr. Akin was a heavy-equipment operator. They moved to the Glenfield area in July 1959. Mr. Akin died Nov. 17, 1982.
Mrs. Akin lived in the Glenfield area until ill health forced her to enter Weber's Adult Home, Port Leyden, and then Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility.
Surviving are two sons, a daughter, three brothers, five sisters, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Two infant sons, Douglas Towne Akin and Philip Lawrence Akin, died before her. A brother, Kenneth Curtis, died in 1985. A sister, Mazel Curtis, died in 1953 at age 16.
A graveside service will be in Hailesboro Cemetery at the family's convenience.
There are no calling hours. Arrangements are with Virkler-Percoski Funeral Home.
