Martha Hess was born at Pierce's Corners in Macomb, NY on April 16, 1878. She was the daughter of Nathan and Ann Cunningham Kenyon. She was married to William J. Hess on July 24, 1895 at the First Methodist Parsonage in Gouverneur and during their marriage they lived in Castorland, Norwood, and Natural Dame. Mr. Hess was a bundler in the kindling wood mill and Mrs. Hess was a practical nurse. She was survived by her son, Glenn, a brother Charles, and a grand daughter. Her husband died in 1932. A grandson, Glenn Kenyon Hess also died before her in 1944. He was a soldier under Gen George Patton, who died at the river during the assault on Metz on November 16, 1944.
