Ernest "Ernie" Leon Mose, 75, passed away earlier this week at the Gund Ranch in Lee.
He was born May 25, 1932, in Ruby Valley to Brownie and Maggie James Mose. He was the youngest of 12 children and grew up on the family homestead and attended Ruby Valley schools until the Mose and Knight extended families relocated to the new South Fork Indian Reservation at Lee. Ernie was a direct descendant of Ruby Valley Treaty signatory Guquizha and member of the Te-Moak Tribe.
He enlisted in the U.S Air Force in 1952 and served four years, training as an aircraft mechanic. He met his wife Cathy of the Yavapai Apache at Camp Verde while stationed at Luke AFB and, following discharge from the service, settled with his wife and two children, Veronica and Ernest Jr., in Prescott, Ariz., and later moved to Sedona, Ariz., where he operated a garage.
Ernie returned to Northern Nevada in the 1970s following his oldest brother Eddie's death to help run the family ranch on the reservation. He subsequently worked for the Reed Ranch at Willow Creek and later for the Gund Ranch where he was employed until his death.
Ernie was widely known for being hard-working, very skilled, and for his colorful character and was well-regarded by his many friends and acquaintances in Nevada and Arizona and will be much missed.
He is survived by daughter Nikki Whitebird of Porterville, Calif.; son Ernest Mose Jr. of Evans, Colo., and older sister Helen Christman of Porterville, Calif.; four nieces - Evalina Cruz of Porterville, Lillian Adams and Sandra Boggs of Elko, and Cheryl Mose-Temoke of Lee; four nephews - Chester Knight and Lewis Knight of Elko, Black Eagle of Mountain Ranch, Calif., and Elwood Mose, Lee; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Ernest was cremated and a brief military graveside service will be conducted.
