Claudia "Marciel" Darst
July 5, 1914 - July 2, 1931 (16 years old)

Marciel was the only daughter of Morris Vernon Darst and Vera Ada Locker. On Thursday, July 2nd, 1931 three days before her 17th birthday, she drowned at Miller Gravel Pit of the Salamonia River, Jay County, Indiana.

Cecil R. Boyd, a young neighbor boy swam out to the center of the gravel pit to save the drowning girl. Cecil age 14 lived next door to Marciel's family. Cecil (1915-1993) is also buried at Salamonia Cemetery, FAG#100913138.

Marciel attended school in Madison township and later at Union City. Survivors are her mother, Vera Hall, step-father John W. Hall, one brother, Myron Darst, one half-brother, John Hall Jr., a grandfather, William Darst of Upland, and a grandmother Mrs. Ida Andrews, of Madison township, her father Vernon Darst is deceased. Funeral arrangements were preformed by Baird Funeral Home.

The 1920 US-Census, Madison Twp, Jay County, Indiana list: (Vera and her two children living with her parents.) Jacob D. Locker age 66, Married-Head of Household, and wife, Leah Locker age 60, and their married daughter; Vera A. Darst age 23, her daughter, Marciel Darst age 5 and her son, Myron G. Darst age 1.

The 1930 US-Census for Wayne Twp, Jay County, Indiana list: John Worley Hall age 27, Head of Household. Wife Vera age 33, and their son, John W. Hall Jr. age 2. Also listed is his stepdaughter Claudia Darst age 15, and his stepson Myron Darst age 12.
