Emily "Mily" Frances (Simons) (Butler) Red was born in Stafford, Genesee, New York. She was the 6th child and 5th daughter born to Silas & Oril (Fiske) Simons.

In 1845, Emily's father Silas moved the family from New York, to Racine, Wisconsin. They resided in Racine until 1852, when their father again moved them to Logtown, El Dorado, California where they ran the Simons Hotel for many years.

It was in Logtown, that Emily met and married in 1854, John C. Butler of Pennsylvania. To Emily and John were born 3 sons, James Logan Butler (Tonopah Jim), Oscar Butler, Frank Fratt Butler.

They farmed in the Mud Springs area for a number of years, until John got the bright idea to move to Nevada and take up cattle ranching.

Off the family went to Nevada. Upon arrival, Emily found the terrain very desolate and not to her liking. In short order she gathered up the 2 youngest boys and went back to her family in Mud Springs where she worked as a chambermaid in the Miller's hotel.

Oscar, who was rather upset by his parents separation, ran off and took a job as a shepherd.

John eventually came and retrieved the 2 youngest and took them back to Nevada to live with him.

The boys remained in contact with their mother until her death.

In 1871, Emily married Charles Red and they resided in Latrobe for many years.

Emily took in two children, her sister Alice's daughter Hattie May Penney b. 1872, the same year her father died. Alice was left with 5 children and no means to care for them all, several of the children were sent to live with husband Richard's sisters.

The second child was in 1876, her sister Lucinda's grandson, Melvin Doan. Melvin's mother Oril E. (Richardson) Doan had passed away leaving her husband Robert with the care of 6 children.

We don't know why, but in 1881 Melvin's father, Robert Doan took Melvin away and placed both of his youngest children in an Nevada orphanage.

Emily raised Hattie May Penney as if she was her own daughter.

Charles, who was fond of hunting was killed accidently in an 1897. After Charles death, Emily moved to Sacramento and then to Santa Clara for a while.

In 1911, she came to Canada to visit her youngest son Frank, who had homesteaded in Alberta. She was present for the birth of her first great grandchild, Alpha Katherine Virinia Butler.

Shortly after returning home to California, she had a stroke. Her oldest son James built her a house in Latrobe area where she could be close to her friends.
