OBITUARY:

JAMES STEWART ONE OF PROMINENT FARMERS OF FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP
DIES UNEXPECTEDLY MONDAY NIGHT
Had Been in Usual Health on Monday
-Funeral Thursday Morning

Special to The Journal.

Darlington, April 4 – James H. Stewart, one of the prominent and progressive farmers of this vicinity, died suddenly Monday night, about 10 o'clock at his home, four miles southeast of here, at the old Stewart homestead, of heart trouble. Mr. Stewart had been in his usual health and his sudden taking away came as a shock to his family and friends.

Mr. Stewart was born within a few rods of where he died, as the house where he has lived recently while on the same farm where he was born is a new one, the old home having been abandoned. He was born Nov. 12, 1848, making him 62 years old last November. He was the son of John A. and Frances Stewart, both of whom died several years ago. W. C. Stewart of this city, the veteran solicitor of The Journal, is the only brother out of five now living. Mrs. Kate Hammack of Frankfort and Mrs. Emma L. Mount of Indianapolis are sisters of the deceased.

Mr. Stewart was married on Nov. 12, 1885, his birthday, to Miss Sarah Elliott, of near Thorntown. She with six children, five sons, Walter A. Stewart, R. F. D. mail carried out of Darlington, and Herman, James A., Mark and Edgar, all at home, and one daughter, Miss Beulah, at home, survive.

The deceased had been a member of the Methodist Church in Darlington since his youth and was a consistent and active member. He was a member of the Masons, Knights of Pythias, Odd Fellow and was a beneficiary member of the Order of Ben-Hur. He was a wideawake and public-spirited citizen and was twice assessor of Franklin township.

The funeral services will be conducted at the Darlington Methodist church by Rev. J. H. Rayle, the pastor, on Thursday at 11 o'clock. The interment will take place at the I. O. O. F. cemetery and will be in charge of the fraternal orders of which the deceased was a member.

Mort Stewart, a well known citizen of the county, died a year ago on March 30.
