He was born in Lanford, and was a son of the late William Lawrence Patterson Sr. and Janie Fleming Patterson.
In 1940 he received his B.A. degree from Wofford College and pursued a career with S.H. Kress & Co., where he managed stores in Americus, Ga., Salisbury, N.C., Johnson City, Tenn., and Winter Park, Fla.
In 1965, he left the retail industry and began his apprenticeship in the funeral service field by purchasing the Gray Funeral Home in Clinton.
In later years Gray Funeral Home of Whitmire and Gray Funeral Home of Laurens were established.
Mr. Patterson was a member, former Lay Leader and administrative board member of Broad Street United Methodist Church. He had served as President of the Clinton Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the United Way and Past President of the S.C. Funeral Directors Association. He was also a member and Past President of the Clinton Kiwanis Club, a member of the Golden "K" Club, Past Distinguished Lt. Governor and Past Distinguished Governor of the Carolina's District in 1982-1983, and was also a Hixon Fellow. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, John W. and Susan Patterson, of Charlotte, N.C., and Ralph F. and Annette Patterson Jr. of Laurens; one daughter and son-in-law, Janie P. and David Mangum, of Lenoir, N.C.; one brother, W.L. (Billy) Patterson Jr., of Laurens; and 12 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Florence Williams Patterson.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Broad Street United Methodist Church, with entombment at Pinelawn Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the Gray Funeral Home.
