The Servant of God, Friar Berardo Atonna OFM., was born Giuseppe Atonna in Episcopio di Sarno, Italy, on July 1, 1843, and made his solemn profession within the Order of Franciscan Friars Minor at the early age of sixteen on December 8, 1863. Ordained presbyter on February 18, 1866, for over forty years he dedicated his religious life on the example of Saint Leonard of Porto Maurizio by organizing popular missions in Campania and Puglia, whilst serving among others as Master of the Franciscan Novices, Definitor, Custody Provincial and later Provincial of the Franciscan Order, an office which he received in 1902.

A spiritual director to many, receiving up to 160 persons a day, he was a keen orator who held deep devotion to Our Lady, which he called "Maria del Divino Amore." In later years, he dedicated long hours to literature, publishing several books on spirituality and Christian doctrine. He died inside Villa Fiorillo, in Capodimonte, Naples, on March 4, 1917, aged 73, where today stands the Basilica dell'Incoronata Madre del Buon Consiglio.

His remains are found interred in the chapel of San Pasquale inside the church of Santa Lucia al Monte within the famous Franciscan convent of Naples. The cause for his beatification is in process.
