Francisco Domingo Abal Gerault, also known as Panchito Abal, was born in Montevideo on June 24, 1951. He completed his education at Stella Maris school in Carrasco and gained recognition as a skilled player in the Old Christians rugby team.

Despite hailing from a prosperous family, Pancho Abal initiated his professional journey in the family-owned cigarette factory. Beyond his good looks and financial comfort, he was esteemed for his ability to connect with people, particularly women.

He experienced the divorce of his parents with sadness and aimed to establish a robust family, drawing inspiration from his close friend Nando Parrado. In a show of solidarity, he invited his cousin Javier Methol and Javier's wife, Liliana Navarro, to accompany him on a trip to Chile.

Tragically, Panchito Abal passed away on October 14, 1972, at the age of 21, succumbing to injuries sustained in an air crash. Following the accident, he endured severe injuries and remained in a semi-conscious state, reaching out for assistance and expressing a sensation of freezing. Afflicted with severe head trauma, he was positioned alongside other injured individuals at the entrance of the fuselage. Unfortunately, he lost his life before they could assess his condition the following day.

In the film "The Society of the Snow," actor Jerónimo Bosia portrays the character of Pancho Abal, thus immortalizing his memory in cinematic storytelling.
