Chico Record (Chico, California) 02 Nov 1932, Wednesday Page 4: J.A. Garland, War Vet, Dies. James A. Garland, Civil War Veteran, died at 7:15 o'clock yesterday morning at the Enloe Hospital after several strokes.
Garland, a native of Maine, was born 86 years ago. When 18 years of age he enlisted with the Union Army as a private in Company E, 15th Regiment, Main Infantry.
For fifty-five years he had been a resident of this section, and for years he had operated the Garland Mine in the Paradise section. Recently he had been living at Forest Ranch and was brought from there to the Enloe Hospital when his condition became critical. Garland was a member of the Halleck Post, Grand Army of the Republic.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Westfall Funeral Home. Graveside services in the G.A.R. plot of the Chico Cemetery will be conducted by members of the Halleck Post.
