Company D, 14th Illinois Cavalry-Civil War

Born Sep 3 1846 in Colinho, Dvoiste, Czechoslovakia, the son of Johann Schmidt (b. 2-6-1823 Dolni Dvoriste, Czech d. 11-25-1863 Chattanooga, TN) and his wife Helena Pilse Smith (b. 8-16-1824 Rozmital, Czechoslavia d. 8-23-1855 Henderson, MN). Information from Jeanie Sawyer 4-1-2013.

Chico Daily Record, Monday, July 3, 1899, pg 1 col 2: John C. Smith of Chico has been granted a pension of $6 per month, and Otis Alonzo Rice of Lovelock will receive $8 per month.

J.C. Smith, born Illinois [sic], joined the Major General Henry W. Halleck Post No. 19, GAR, of Chico. He died September 30, 1926. Oroville Daily Register (Oroville, California) 02 Oct 1926, Saturday Page 1: Chico G.A.R. Veteran Dead. Chico, Oct. 1 – John Charles Smith aged seventy-eight years, veteran of the Civil War, died at an early hour yesterday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lottie Pepper.

Mr. Smith, whose death terminated a lengthy illness, was a member of Halleck Post, G.A.R. He served with the Union Army throughout the conflict as a drummer.

Born in Germany, the deceased came to the United States at an early age and following the outbreak of the Civil War enlisted with Company D, 14th Illinois Cavalry, when only fourteen years of age. He later came to California, where he resided for sixty years. The past fifty years he had spent in or near Chico.

Surviving relatives are two daughters, Mrs. Ethel Callahan of Calpine, and Mrs. Pepper, of Chico; four sons, Walter, of Modesto; Floyd, of Niles, and Clarence and Arthur Smith of Chico, and thirteen grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Westfall Funeral Home. Rev. W.L. Mellinger of the Christian Church will conduct the rites at the chapel, after which services at the grave in the Chico cemetery will be conducted by members of the G.A.R.
