Oroville Mercury, Tuesday Evening, September 27, 1904, pg 3 col 1: Local News. Lafayette Smith, a veteran of the Civil War, died at his home in Chico Monday. He was nearly 83 years of age.
Chico Record, Wednesday Morning, September 28, 1904, pg 7 col 4: Lafayette Smith Laid In Grave. The funeral of Lafayette Smith, the aged veteran who answered the last summons Monday, was held from the family residence yesterday afternoon, and was largely attended by friends and comrades of the G.A.R. Rev. W.G. White of the Presbyterian church preached the funeral sermon in an impressive and affecting manner. At the grave the ceremonial of the G.A.R. was rendered by Halleck Post, of which deceased was an honored member. Senior Vice Commander O.W. Best acted in the absence of Commander Williams.
The pall bearers were D.L. Barnes, A. Honodel, W.H. Waddams, Sol. Pettit, J.F. Smith and Dan Winters.
Burial took place at Chico Cemetery, per CCA records on Sep 27, 1904.
