Richard C. "Dickie" Atkins, 73, of Madison, passed away June 5, 2008. He died in his garden at home of a chronic illness.
He was born April 8, 1935. Our beloved father was preceded in death by his wife, ; his parents, Robert and Catherine Atkins; and one sister, Betty Frazier of Charleston.

Dickie retired from Appalachian Power Company. He was a lifelong member of Madison United Methodist Church and an honorary member of Madison United Methodist Women. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He is survived by children, Ricky Atkins of Madison, Terri (Harold) May of Logan, Tia (Dale) Kirby of Madison and Tracy Richard Atkins of Fort Mills, S.C.; grandchildren, Amber Atkins of Alum Creek, Haylea Donevant of Madison, Richard H. Atkins of Madison, and Alexis Atkins of Parkersburg; brother, Robert "Bobby Joe" Atkins of Vero Beach, Fla.; sisters, Roberta (J.C.) Workman of Charleston, "Boots" (James) McCoy of Teays Valley and "Jimmy" (Gerald) Barnhart of Beaumont, Texas; and a host of friends. Special friends include H.H. "Sonny" Howell, Calvin Duncan, Larry Bowen, "Snuffy" Byrnside and Dr. Frank "Tex" Frye.

The funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday, June 9, 2008, at Madison United Methodist Church with Dr. L. Frank Frye officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens, Madison, with graveside rites by Daniel Boone VFW Post 5578, Madison.

Friends may call after 11:30 a.m. at the church.
