Sylvester J. Breitenbach "Sy"
Wanatah -- Sylvester J. "Sy" Breitenbach, age 78, a lifetime Wanatah resident passed away Friday, May 16, 2003 at his home. He was born January 26, 1925 in Wanatah, the son of Aloysius and Augusta (Daniels) Breitenbach, graduated from Morgan Township High School in 1943, served with the U. S. Army in the Philippines during WW II and was a member of Wanatah American Legion Post #403. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wanatah, had worked for many years at Anco in Michigan City retiring in 1988 and will be lovingly remembered for his beautiful garden and love for golf and baseball.
On April 19, 1952 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Valparaiso, he married Pauline Flitter who survives along with their three children, Kathleen (Donald) Scurlock of Wanatah, Carol Trout of Plant City, FL and Steven (Cindy) Breitenbach of Wanatah; five brothers and sisters, Brother Clarence Breitenbach, C.S.C. of Notre Dame, IN, Leo (Jacquelyn) Breitenbach of Valparaiso, Sister M. Judian Breitenbach, P.H.J.C. of LaPorte, Loretta (Kenneth) Hanson of LaPorte, and Margaret Majewski of Hobart; eight grandchildren and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter in 1958.
A Funeral Mass will be held Monday, 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wanatah, with Fr. Jerry Schweitzer officiating with burial at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation Sunday 2:00 to 7:00 PM at Sacred Heart Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to the St. Vincent DePaul Society at Sacred Heart. Wanatah Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements.
