He was born to Charles and Ella (Theurer) Sommer. On June 6, 1937, he married Margaret Wickersham, who survives at the residence.
Also surviving are a daughter, Betty (Allan) Woodmansee, Fort Wayne; a sister-in-law, Grace Sommer, Cincinnati, OH; and two grandchildren.
Deceased are five brothers, Howard, Earl, Clarence, Alva and Ivan.
He was the manager of the former Morris Variety Store and later owned the former Sommer Variety Store both in St. Marys. He also was employed at the U.S Refining Company, Cleveland. He was a member of the Wayne Street United Methodist Church, St. Marys, where he served as a trustee and was on the administrative board. He was a charter member of the Homemakers Class at the church and a member of the St. Marys Rotary International Club for 62 years where he received the Rotary's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001and the Paul Harris Fellow award in 2006. In 1933, he graduated from Madison Township High School in Portland, Ind.
Services are at the Miller Funeral Home, St. Marys, the Rev. Mary Kay Brown, officiating.
