AUTO STRUCK BY FLYER AT SAGER ROAD
Adolph Werner, age 65 years, well known Morgan township farmer, was instantly killed at 12:45 o'clock this afternoon when his automobile was struck by a fast east-bound Nickel Plate railroad freight train at the Sager Road crossing just west of the local depot.
Werner, from all reports, was headed south enroute to his home, after a business trip to Valparaiso to obtain medicine for a sick horse.
It is believed he failed to see the approaching train until too late to avoid the crash.
The automobile was carried down the tracks for some distance before the train was brought to a stop. Werner's mangled body was wedged under the engine and was decapitated.
M. E. Leichty, of Fort Wayne, fireman, is believed the only eyewitness to the tragedy. T. H. Lapp, engineer, on the other side of the train, did not see the car approach the crossing.
Dr. Carl M. Davis, county coroner, was summoned, but did not interrogate any of the trainmen. He will hold an inquest later.
Werner was a bachelor and resided on a farm in Morgan township with his brother, Robert. For a number of years they resided in Valparaiso on Brown Street, but moved back to the farm several years ago.
Surviving are three brothers; Robert, of Morgan township, Fred, of Wanatah, and Edward, of Kouts; and two sisters; Mrs. Louis Grieger of LaCrosse, and Mrs. Bertha Debrick of Michigan City.
Memorial services have not been completed and will be announced tomorrow. The body is at the LePell and Son Funeral Home on Monroe Street.
