Freeman D. Loveland, 86 of Pennsville, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007 at his residence.

Born in Cedarville, he was the son of the late Washington Irving and Laura Viola (Zimmerman) Loveland. Freeman was a longtime Salem County resident. He graduated from Woodstown High School in 1937 and held various management positions with local food retailers and DuPont & Co., before joining the army in October 1941.

As a member of the 82nd Airborne, he participated in several theaters of operation beginning with the D-Day Invasion of Normandy and concluding with the second Battle of the Bulge in Germany. He received numerous honors including the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star.

Following his honorable discharge from the 82nd, Freeman married Ann Moncrief in January 1946, enjoying 33 years together until her death in 1979. Residing in Woodstown, Freeman was appointed postmaster in Harrisonville and with Ann operated the general store on Main Street in Harrisonville for three years until accepting a position at Owen Supply Co., a local farm equipment dealership. Freeman retired as president and general manager after 35 years.

In 1980, Freeman married Edna Weldin of Pennsville. For the past 27 years Freeman and Edna have lived in Pennsville, enjoying the fruits of retirement which included golf and bowling. An avid wood worker, Freeman spent everyday in his garage working on new creations for family and friends.

As a member of the Woodstown American Legion, Freeman was a co-founder and charter member of the Woodstown Ambulance Association where he served as Captain for many years. He donated land on Broad Street and was instrumental in securing the necessary permits for the Woodstown Reliance Fire Department. He was recognized in 1982 by the department as an Honorary Fireman.

He is survived by his wife Edna M. Loveland; sons Leslie I. Loveland of Oceanport, NJ and Rev. James F Loveland of Neptune, NJ; stepson E. David Weldin of Doylestown, Pa. and stepdaughter Elaine Bramlett of Georgetown, Del.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at the Laughrey Funeral Home where friends may call. Burial with Honors will be at the Salem County Veterans Cemetery, Pilesgrove.
