He was wounded while fighting the enemy near Osan, South Korea on September 27, 1950. He succumbed to his wounds in Japan on October 10, 1950.
PFC Austin was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
He has a memorial tile at the Redlands, CA Veterans Memorial Eternal Flame, which honors Redlands soldiers killed in action. The Flame is located on the corner of Redlands Blvd. and New York Streets in Redlands, CA.
