Maurice Edward Barnes, 88, died peacefully at his home in Colorado Springs on June 11, 2008. He was born October 10, 1919 in Plainview, Nebraska to Melzar and Mary Blanche (Bomar) Barnes.
Maurice served in the Navy during WWII from April 29, 1941 as a Machinist Mate First Class until April 20, 1947. He was awarded the American Defense, American Theater, Victory Medal, the European- African-Middle Eastern (1 star), Asiatic-Pacific, Good Conduct, and the Presidential Unit Citation ribbons.
Following his service in the Navy he became a skilled carpenter and cabinet maker until the last two years of his life. He learned his trade from his father who was also a carpentry craftsman.
Maurice was preceded in death by his parents and was the last of 14 children to join them. He is survived by his wife Elvira (Bertram) Barnes, three sons, Gary of Chandler, AZ, Roger of San Diego, CA, and Mark of Colorado Springs; five grandsons - Ryan, Eric, Justin, Mark, and Steven Barnes; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be Monday, June 16, 2008 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 3825 Airport Road, Colorado Springs, CO. Services will be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2226 N. Corona on Tuesday, June 17th, 2008 at 11:00 a.m.
