Alva "Keith" "Al" Smith, 79, a resident of the upper valley for the past 50 years, died Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at his home in the Dryden area. He was born on May 24, 1929, at Las Animas, CO, to Harvey and Violet (Brown) Smith. Keith graduated high school in La Junta, CO and because there was no work to be found, moved to the Wenatchee Valley, where he worked in the fruit industry. In 1948, he met and married Beverly Jane Hewitt at Entiat. He later worked for a short time with the U.S. Forest Service, with his father-in-law, remodeling houses, working as a salesman for Watkins Products and the Fuller Brush Company and various other jobs, before going to work for Alcoa and later, for Dolco Packaging, where he worked for over 30 years. After the loss of his wife Beverly, Keith married May Lekberg Caldwell at Ephrata on May 20, 1989. Keith was a major volunteer for the Central Washington Holiness Association, doing some cooking, maintenance and any other position he could assist with. Keith loved bowling. He and May were involved with many bowling leagues and were members of the Dolco Bowling Team, the Grandpa and Grandma Bowling Team and the Young at Heart Bowling Team. Keith also enjoyed gardening, but his greatest love was for his family and especially the time spent with his grandchildren. Keith just loved people in general, he made friends easily and made them all feel comfortable and at home. He was a member of the Leavenworth Church of the Nazarene for over 25 years, where every third or fourth month, Keith and May would prepare a pork dinner for the church's benefit. Keith is survived by his wife, May Smith of the family home; his children and their spouses, Gail and Stan Wentworth of East Wenatchee, Phil and Karen Smith of Newberg, OR, Deborah and Paul Heeren of Cashmere, Crystal Downing of Grays Harbor, Nancy and Phil Pietzold of Portland, OR, Debra and Carl Florea of Bainbridge Island, Greg and Linda Caldwell of Lockeford, CA, Sharon and David Boggs of Moses Lake, Sheryl and Matthew McGuire of Portland, OR and Merrie and Raymond McDonnell of Ephrata; brothers, Ivan Smith of East Wenatchee, Miles Smith of Chicago, IL and Donald Smith of Vancouver, WA; 29 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Keith was preceded in death by his first wife, Beverly; brother, Jack Smith; sisters, Celeste and Lucille; and two sons, Stephen Smith and Baby Andrew Smith. A Memorial Service of Commemoration to Celebrate the Life of Alva "Keith" "Al" Smith will be held on Thursday, June 19, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at the Leavenworth Church of the Nazarene, with Pastor Jon Vandel and Dr. Phil Smith officiating. Private Family Burial will be in the Wenatchee City Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made, in Keith's name, to the Upper Valley Christian School at 111 Ski Hill Drive, Leavenworth, WA 98826 or the Central Washington Holiness Association at 2800 Entiat Way, Entiat, WA 98822. Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, is in charge of arrangements.
