Grayson Woman Killed by Car While Awaiting Christmas Visit

WHITESBORO - Funeral arrangements remained incomplete Monday morning for Mrs.
Betty Stone Cowgur, 59, wife of George W. Cowgur, prominent farmer in the Dixie
community, who was killed instantly Sunday when she stepped in front of an
automobile on the streets of Gainesville.
If relatives arrive Monday, funeral services were to be held during the day,
otherwise will be held Tuesday.
The death of Mrs.. Cowgur was a pre-Christmas tragedy which occured after she
had spent Saturday night with relatives in Gainesville and was awaiting the
arrival of other relatives from Shawnee Okla to spend Christmas with her. She
started to walk around a parked automobile after greeting the relatives it was
stated and walked in front of a car driven by J. B. Faulkner of Greenville, who
was enroute to Ada, Okla, to attend a funeral.
Her head struck an upright post supporting the windshield and she was thrown
several yards to the pavement.
Mrs. Cowgur is survived by her husband and the following sons and daughters:
Carl of Marysville, John of Gainesville, whom she was visiting, Wallace of
Levelland, Mrs. Claud Franklin, Mrs. Charles Bayes and Miss Daisy Stone, Dixie,
and Mrs. G. B. Estes, Levelland; a sister, Mrs. N. G. Smallwood of Whitesboro, a
brother, John Stone of Pottscamp, Miss, 11 grandchildren and six stepchildren.
Mrs. Cowgur was born Jan. 4, 1875, in Pottscamp, Miss., the daughter of John and
Sarah Elizabeth Stone. Her father was a pioneer Methodist minister. She came
to Grayson county 26 years ago with her husband, John Walter Stone, who was also
her cousin. She married two years ago to Mr. Cowgur. She was a member of the
Dixie Baptist church.
