Joseph E. Chadbourne (Chadbourn) enlisted in the 27th Maine
infantry as a 2nd Lt. on 9/30/1862. He was promoted to 1st
Lt. on 12/16/1862. He mustered out on 7/17/1863 at Portland, Me. The 27th Me. was the regiment that had been
awarded Medal of Honor for extending thier enlistments. Through an error even those men that didn't extend got the
medal. A review board in 1917 purged the medals of the 27th.
