Habib Aschi, 82, formerly of New Kensington, died Wednesday, March 12, 2008, in Clearwater, Fla., where he resided since 1979. Born Nov. 23, 1925, in Haifa, Palestine, son of the late Costandi Ashi and Anisi Ladawi Ashi, he immigrated to the United States in 1952 and resided in New Kensington from 1956 until 1979. Mr. Aschi owned the H&H Supermarket in Parnassus. Later, he and his brother-in-law, George Nader, opened the first Shop-n-Save Supermarket in New Kensington. Mr. Aschi also owned three Foodland Supermarkets in Altoona. Upon moving to Florida in 1979, he founded Quality Engineering in Clearwater, which he operated until his health began to fail in 1998. Surviving are his wife, Helen Nader Aschi, whom he married in 1956; his children, Dr. Philip Aschi and his wife, Laura, and their children, Alexander and Christian, all of Lebanon, Ohio, Carole Jean Larach and her husband, Dr. Fernando Larach, and their children, Joseph, Helaine and Caroline, all of Safety Harbor, Fla., and Michael Aschi and his wife, Jenna, and their son, Anthony, of South Lyon, Mich. He also leaves a brother, Basil Ashi and his wife, Nadia, of New Kensington; and a sister, Leila Chaanine, of Moorehead City, N.C. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Kamel, Edward, George and Anis Ashi. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday only in ROSS G. WALKER FUNERAL HOME, New Kensington, where prayers of transfer will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, followed by a Christian Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in Mt. St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, 100 Freeport Road, New Kensington. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery, Arnold.
