Sacramento, Jan. 19, 1894. Wilson Howard, who was hanged today at Lebanon, Mo., was at one time a convict in San Quentin prison, having been sent from Calaveras County for the crime of robbery under the name of Charles Brown. An agent from the State of Missouri laid these facts before Governor Markham that Howard, alias Brown, had murdered a deaf mute in that State, and that he was also guilty of the murder of five persons in the State of Kentucky. Upon these representations Governor Markham commuted the sentence of the murderer to 149 days, at the expiration of which time, January 24, 1891, he was delivered into the custody of a Missouri officer. The Governor remarked at the time that be believed by commuting the sentence justice would be better served.
