Don W. Kirchhofer, 83, of Jacksonville, died Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. He was born May 10, 1924, near Shumway, the son of William and Augusta Stuckemeyer Kirchhofer. He married Frances L. Lane on June 11, 1950, at Grace United Methodist Church in Jacksonville and she survives.

He is also survived by four sons, David of Quincy, Gary of Naples, Greg of Huntsville, AL. and Steve of Terre Haute, IN.; one grandson, Taylor Kirchhofer of Jacksonville; and two brothers, Bill Kirchhofer of Franklin Grove and Norman (wife, Naomi) Kirchhofer of Shumway. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence, Arthur and Ervin Kirchhofer; and one sister, Edna Kelly.

Mr. Kirchhofer was a 1942 graduate of Stewardson High School, then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After his discharge, he graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 1948. He then began his teaching career at David Prince Junior High School in Jacksonville, also coaching 7th Grade basketball. After marriage, he received his Master's Degree in 1952 from University of Illinois.

He then taught at Turner Junior High School when it opened, retiring in 1985. While at Turner, he was involved with the Junior Museum and was in charge of the Science Fair for many years. He was a longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church, and was a member of Jacksonville Sportsman Club, American Legion, and Jacksonville Family Campers. He enjoyed working in his yard, gardening and being outdoors.

Services were entrusted to Buchanan and Cody Funeral Home of Jacksonville, Illinois.
