While taking photos of a nearby gravesite, I found the grave on the right almost covered over with dirt. I saw the word "GRANDMOTHER" and could not walk away with it covered. Cleaned it off and discovered that the stone to the left was similar. The given names were the same ... only reversed, although the surnames were different and the gravestone design formed a frame. These two had to be related. When I got home I started researching the U.S. Census'. These are, indeed, mother and daughter.
Abbie married John Graham prob. abt. 1902. On the 1910 Census, they are living in Spokane, WA. John A. is 36 (b. in WV as were both his parents) and Abbie, 33, (b. in IL, father in OH, and mother in IN). They have three children: Mary E., 7, born in MO; Haney M./Nancy, 5, born in WA; and Roger P., 1, born in WA.
On the 1920 Census, still in Spokane; now John is 46 and Abbie is 42. Mary is 17, Haney M./Nancy is not listed, but there is a Marjorie who is 15 (could be the same person), Rober P. is 10; now there is Gertrude F., 8, and Abbie S. who is 6.
In 1930, still in Spokane, but Mary E. and Marjorie have probably married, as they are not listed. Roger is 21, Gertrude F. is 18, and Abbie S. is 16.
Social Security Death Index shows that Abbie Graham died in Los Angeles County. These two are difficult to trace as they keep reversing their names. Abbie Severson's Death index shows that her mother's maiden name is McCalmont.
