History was Audrey Hunt's forte.

The local historian devoted much time combing archives, scanning relics and interviewing families to co-author "In Remembrance," a history of White Lake Township.

She also researched and edited material for a booklet on the sesquicentennial of the St. Patrick's Church chapel and cemetery.

"She delved into it -- visiting farms, went into attics, borrowed family pictures," said her daughter Barbara Meloche.

"She really worked meticulously to find details. She wanted to tell the full story."

Mrs. Hunt, of Waterford Township, died from cancer on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007, at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Hospital in Pontiac. She was 83.

Born Aug. 29, 1924, in Chatham Township, Ontario, Audrey Jean Deloge moved to Detroit with her mother, Eunice Popeney, in the 1940s.

Leaving school, she worked at a local bakery. She was later introduced to neighbor Joseph Hunt, who was on a furlough from the U.S. Army Air Corps. They wed on Feb. 22, 1944.

The couple lived in Detroit until the early 1950s, when they relocated to White Lake Township. There, Mrs. Hunt became a member of St. Patrick's Church for some 55 years.

Piqued by a search for her father, Wilfred Deloge, she scoured for genealogy and joined the White Lake Historical Society in the 1980s.

When exploring regional lore, "she really tried to go right to the primary people who had the stories," Meloche said.

"She just loved the history of the whole area."

For years, Mrs. Hunt also worked as a docent at the Kelley-Fisk Farm, preparing lessons for a one-room schoolhouse at the site, Meloche said.

To further her family research, she later traveled to Europe and Canada.

With more finds and collected keepsakes she culminated her research in the publication of a family ancestry: "Written with Love.. Memories and Family History of Joseph Aloysius Hunt and Audrey Jean Deloge."

"She kept every single artifact -- wedding invitations, graduation announcements," Meloche said. "That's the way she began filling in the picture."

Besides tending a garden of petunias and other vibrant flowers, Mrs. Hunt loved to attend family gatherings.

"That was what she lived for -- to be with family," Meloche said.

Other survivors include three sons, Steven, John and Richard; a daughter, Julie Whitlock; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband and mother.
