David Griffin Gunn was the son of Daniel Burnett Gunn and Eliza Henry Brandon. He was born in Caswell County, North Carolina, but by 1860 the family had moved to Rankin County, Mississippi where David met his first wife Katherine Auguste. They married in Hinds County, Mississippi December 19, 1866. David was a minister, and they moved a lot. Together, they had five children, Lizzie, Griffin Jr., Katie, Harcourt, and Henry. Katherine died around the time that Henry was born in 1889 in Jackson County, Minnesota.
By 1896, David was in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri, where he married Roberta Ruffner Drane on February 24th. By 1900, the family was in Texas. They moved wherever the ministry took them. In 1920, they were in Houston, Harris County, Texas. This is where David died in 1922.
