Benjamin F. Shively was born on Christmas Day 1919, the son of Harry Shively, an engineer at a paper mill, and Agnes Albrecht Shively, a homemaker.

Ben, as he was known, attended school in Three Rivers, Michigan. The April 1940 Census said he was a laborer at a paper mill. He'd worked 30 weeks in 1939 and earned $300. He enlisted in the Navy on Oct. 8, 1940.

Mr. Shively was a fireman 1st class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941.

VFW Post 3019 in Three Rivers is named in his memory.
