The son of Amos & Amanda (Harper) Hoffman, in 1860 he was a farmer living with his family in Lykens, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 7" tall and had dark hair and black eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 23, 1864, mustered into federal service there August 31 as a musician with Co. A, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.
He married Mary A. Swab August 25, 1869, in Dauphin County and fathered Elsie Irene (b. 04/02/71), Edwin Harper (b. 04/19/73), Charles Edgar (b. 03/25/75), Henrietta (b. 12/10/76), Sallie (b. 11/25/78), John Robert (b. 10/14/80), Carrie May (b. 03/18/83 - married William Lewis Witmer), and Joseph Homer (b. 12/23/91). He became a textile manufacture. Cause of death is listed as "general atheroma of heart & blood vessels; chronic disease of prostrate [sic] gland uremia."
