Mary Glaspell Burrows obituary from Davenport newspaper 8 Sept 1886

The life of one of the best of women terminated at 6 o'clock this morning when Mrs. Mary J. Burrows died. She was the wife of Mr. David Burrows who was her companion for thirty-six years. Mrs. Burrows was born in Hamilton County, Ohio in 1826, the daughter of James and Jane [Stathem] Glaspell. When she was but thirteen years of age the family came to Davenport—and here the father made a claim which became so well known as the Glaspell farm, just west of the city. In the city Miss Glaspell received the best education granted here, and Davenport had an excellent school for girls. In July 1850 she and Mr. David Burrows were united in marriage. The husband was one of Davenport's most prosperous businessmen at that time, and for years after, and the home of Mr. and Mrs. Burrows one of the most hospitable in the city. Mrs. Burrows was an admired character in society—-kind, benevolent, amiable, true-hearted, intelligent. With the exception of eight years spent in western Iowa and Nebraska, Mr. and Mrs. Burrows lived in Davenport from the day of their wedding until death's separation. The wife became a member of the Christian Church when but sixteen years old, and communion never knew a more faithful and constant adherent.

Two daughters, Ida and Minnie, survive with the husband. The ailment which proved fatal to Mrs. Burrows was paralysis. The attack came to her last Saturday forenoon at 11 o'clock, and she was comatose except for brief intervals until death came.

The funeral will take place from the family residence at 328 East 15th Street tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock. Six nephews of the deceased—Charles, Elmer, Milton, and Harry Glaspell, David Burrows, and Edgar McArthur—will act as pall-bearers.
