Carol Marie (nee Strassman) Chambers Schmidt, a much loved mother, mother in law, grandmother, great grandmother and sister, entered into the joy of the Lord's presence at Sunny Ridge Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. The family takes great comfort knowing she is now at peace.
Carol was born on November 23, 1931, to parents Gertrude and Clarence Strassman in the Town of Schleswig, Wisconsin. She enjoyed a happy childhood growing up in the Kiel area with her sisters Dolores and Sandy.
She attended Kiel High School, served on the 1948 prom court, graduating in 1949.
After high school, Carol and Dolores worked at Mirro Co. in Manitowoc. She then worked as an office clerk at St. Nicholas Hospital and later in life worked at the Sheboygan Clinic and the County Hospital as well.
Carol's leisure time in her younger years was often spent with her friends and family, watching movies, listening to music and even performed in a quartet with Dolores as a member of Sweet Adelines.
In November 1953, Carol enlisted in the U.S. Navy WAVES, reporting for recruit training at the U.S. Naval Training Center in Bainbridge, Maryland. In June 1954, Carol graduated as a Hospital Apprentice from the U.S. Naval Hospital in Great Lakes, Illinois. Stationed at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas, Carol earned the rank of Hospital Corpsman Third Class, as well as earning the National Defense Service Medal.
While serving in Corpus Christi, Carol met and married fellow Naval Corpsman Roderick Chambers in August 1955.
After completing their honorable service in the Navy Carol and Rod eventually moved to the Sheboygan area where together they raised their children Lori, Robert 'Jay', Jayne and Marsha Chambers.
In 1974, Carol married Eugene Schmidt and relocated to the Cedarburg Area where she worked in the office at Pioneer Container. Upon retiring in 1996, they moved back to Sheboygan to be closer to family where they enjoyed dining out, taking Sunday drives, watching TV, reading, planting flowers and spending time with family. Carol and Gene both had a passion for music. Because Gene was a gifted organist, he would often entertain at family gatherings always with Carol's proud encouragement. He also played the organ at various church functions and fundraisers at both Ebenezer UCC and Bethany Reformed Church where they were active and faithful members. One of Carol's greatest joys was going to the Sheboygan Elk's Club every Friday night where Gene entertained members as lodge organist. Carol loved listening to him play, sometimes dancing with her grandchildren.
When Gene passed away in 1998, Carol moved to Howards Grove to be closer to her daughter Jayne. When her illness became too difficult for her to manage independently, she moved into Harmony Assisted Living and then into Sunny Ridge where she has resided for the past 5 years.
Best known as a happy and kindhearted woman who would genuinely greet friends and strangers alike with her bright smile, Carol saw goodness in everyone. And she loved to talk. Striking up a friendly conversation was something she could do easily and did often. Her faith and values, as well as her good sense of humor and her ability to always look at the bright side of life is something she instilled in each of her children, along with her generosity, her insatiable sweet tooth, infectious smile, and her soft contagious laugh. Memories of 'Mom Carol' and 'Grandma Carol' will forever be cherished in the hearts of family and friends she leaves behind, especially her surviving children; Lori and Dick Weinhold of Sheboygan; Robert 'Jay' and Trudy Chambers of Sheboygan: Jayne and Rodney Dragan of Howards Grove; and Marsha and James Bauer of Appleton.
Her grandchildren: Melissa and Brandon Lis of Sheboygan; Deanna and Justin Hildebrand of Sheboygan; Tyler, Zachary, Austin and Mason Chambers of Sheboygan, Danielle Dragan of Howards Grove, Samuel and Lindsey Bauer of Appleton, and her four great grandchildren, Owen and Gabriel Hildebrand; and Anthony Soto and Presley Lis. Carol is further survived by her devoted sisters, Dolores Miller of Sheboygan and Sandy Schmitz of Franklin, WI as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Carol is preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter Lana Jayne Chambers, her brothers in law, James Miller and Robert Schmitz and her husband Gene Schmidt.
Carol faced the last stages of life's journey with bravery, grace and dignity with unwavering care and support from her sister Dolores, as well as the dedicated staff at Sunny Ridge and Hospice Advantage. The family is truly grateful for each of you who cared and comforted her during her time of need.
