Wilbur Ernest Howard was born in DeKalb county, Ill., on Oct. 20, 1860, and departed this life from Denver, Colo., March 16, 1938. He spent his early childhood in Illinois and Minnesota. During youth and young manhood, the family lived at Sterling, Neb.

On March 7, 1893 [Sic.], he was married to Rebecca Reed, who remained his life-long companion until her death on Aug. 15, 1937. During the 54 years of their married life two sons and two daughters have lived and established homes for themselves: Ralph H. of Brighton, Colo.; Lester C. of Belfry, Mont.; Mrs. Maude Thorpe, Sidney, Neb.; Mrs. Bertha Rodenbeck, Halford. There are thirteen grandchildren, six great grandchildren, four brothers: Arthur and Wesley of Thomas, Okla.; Harless and John of Amarillo, Texas; three sisters: Mrs. Mary Place, Chicago; Mrs. Hattie Bradshaw and Mrs. Grace Dobbs of Thomas, Okla.

Interment was in the family lot at Beulah cemetery where a monument of granite stands at the head of their graves.

During September of 1885 he filed on a homestead at Halford, which has been his home ever since. This enrolls the name of Wilbur Ernest Howard among the real pioneers of Thomas county.

He became a Christian in early life and united with the Methodist church, which he served loyally till his death. He was a faithful husband, a kind father, and a leader in community activities during his lon life, a model of thrifty, honest, upright living.

Funeral services were held from the Methodist church, Saturday afternoon, March 19, the minister officiating.
