QUARTERMAIN, WALTER WARREN - 1900-1986 - The death of a well-known St. Stephen businessman, Walter W. Quartermain, occurred on August 3, 1986, at the Carleton Manor in Woodstock, NB. Born at Springhill, York County, in 1900, he was the son of Rueben and Florence (Stone) Quartermain. He owned and operated an Insurance Agency for 40 years. He was Founder and President of St. Croix Valley Products Limited; a company engaged in the growing and canning of fresh fruits and vegetables, baked beans, and brown bread. The company also manufactured woolen yard goods and garments and, for the past 30 years, he was president of Quartermain's Woollens Limited. He served as a Town Councillor and was elected Mayor of St. Stephen in 1938. He was Past Patron of Chapter No. 8 Order of Eastern Star and a 60-year member of Sussex Lodge No. 7 F. AM; Frontier Lodge No. 4; Knights of Pythias; Miriam Lodge No. 56 IOOF. He was a past president of the St. Stephen Kiwanis Club and Curling Club. He ran in the 1936 Provincial election as a candidate for the Reconstruction Party. He was predeceased by his wife Mariette (Laubman) and son, Allan. He is survived by one daughter, Ann Allaby of Woodstock; three sons: Mansell of Black's Harbour, John M. and Beverly of St. Stephen; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral service was held at MacDonald's Funeral Chapel with the Anglican Rector, Canon F. Paul Delong officiating. Pallbearers were grandsons, Kenneth Allaby, John B. David, and Bill Quartermain, nephew Carl Laubman and David A. Smith. Interment was in the St. Stephen Rural Cemetery.
