He was born on Feb. 2, 1922, in Peoria, a son of Ivan E. and Jennie M. Widdows Gares Sr. He married Mary Ozga on Feb. 15, 1947, in Chicago. She died on Jan. 8, 1998, in Peoria.
He also was preceded in death by one infant daughter, one sister and one brother.
Surviving are one daughter, Linda J. Proctor of Peoria; and one son, Thomas E. Gares of Peoria.
Mr. Gares worked as a sales agent for Prudential Insurance Co. in Peoria for 12 years. He later was the owner and operator of the Western Auto Store in Peoria for 18 years, retiring in 1980.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II.
Cremation rites will be accorded.
